The journey ahead

10 days, in order

This itinerary combines the three things most first-time visitors come to Nepal for: the UNESCO-listed heritage of the Kathmandu Valley, close mountain views without a multi-day trek, and a genuine jungle safari in the lowlands. It starts and ends at Tribhuvan International Airport, suits solo travellers, couples and families alike, and can be shortened or extended to fit the time you have.

Day by day

Tap a day to open it

Land at Tribhuvan International Airport, where a representative meets you and transfers you to your hotel. The day is yours to recover from the flight and adjust. In the evening, a welcome dinner of traditional Nepali thali, often with a folk dance performance.

  1. Airport pickup and hotel check-in

  2. Free afternoon around Thamel

  3. Welcome dinner with cultural show - optional

A full day through Kathmandu's spiritual and historic core. Begin at Pashupatinath, one of the holiest Hindu sites, dedicated to Lord Shiva on the banks of the Bagmati. Continue to Boudhanath, among the largest stupas in the world and the heart of the Tibetan Buddhist community, where you can walk the kora circuit. Finish at Kathmandu Durbar Square, the royal palace complex of carved temples and courtyards.

  1. Pashupatinath Temple - allow about 1.5 hours

  2. Boudhanath Stupa and the kora circuit - about 1 hour

  3. Kathmandu Durbar Square & Kumari Ghar, home of the Living Goddess

Visit Swayambhunath - the Monkey Temple - on its hilltop above the city, with panoramic views over the whole Kathmandu Valley. In the afternoon, cross the Bagmati to Patan, renowned for its Newari craftsmanship, for Patan Durbar Square and the Patan Museum.

  1. Swayambhunath Stupa and the valley viewpoint

  2. Patan Durbar Square & Patan Museum

  3. Free evening for shopping in Thamel or Patan

Leave the city for the hill station of Nagarkot, famed for one of the finest Himalayan panoramas in the valley - views toward Langtang and, on clear days, Everest. Check into a hillside resort and spend the late afternoon walking through pine forest and terraced farmland before the sunset turns the mountains gold.

  1. Scenic drive from Kathmandu to Nagarkot

  2. Short nature walk through the hills

  3. Sunset viewpoint over the Himalayan range

An early start for sunrise over the Himalayas from the Nagarkot viewing tower. After breakfast, travel to Pokhara, Nepal's lakeside town and the gateway to the Annapurna region. If time is short, a 25-minute domestic flight replaces the drive. The evening is free by the lake.

  1. Sunrise from Nagarkot Tower

  2. Overland drive via the Prithvi Highway, or a domestic flight

  3. Evening stroll along Lakeside, Pokhara

A full day among Pokhara's lakes and waterfalls. Row a wooden boat across Phewa Lake to Tal Barahi Temple, visit the thundering Davis Falls and the Gupteshwor Cave beside it, and climb - or drive - to the World Peace Pagoda for uninterrupted views of the Annapurna range reflected in the water below.

  1. Boating on Phewa Lake to Tal Barahi Temple

  2. Davis Falls and Gupteshwor Cave

  3. World Peace Pagoda viewpoint

  4. Optional: Gurkha Memorial Museum or International Mountain Museum

An early drive up to Sarangkot for one of the most celebrated sunrises in Nepal, as first light strikes Machhapuchhre - Fishtail - and the Annapurna massif. Back to Pokhara for breakfast, then south to the subtropical lowlands and Chitwan National Park, Nepal's premier wildlife reserve.

  1. Sunrise at the Sarangkot viewpoint

  2. Drive south to Chitwan National Park

  3. Evening orientation walk in a Tharu village

A full day in Nepal's wilderness. Choose a jeep safari or a guided jungle walk in search of one-horned rhinoceros, deer, crocodiles and - with luck - the elusive Bengal tiger. Paddle a dugout canoe down the Rapti River for birdlife, and in the evening watch a traditional Tharu stick dance.

  1. Jeep safari or guided jungle walk

  2. Canoe ride on the Rapti River

  3. Visit to a local Tharu village and museum

  4. Evening Tharu cultural dance show

Travel back to Kathmandu by road, or take a short domestic flight. The final afternoon is for souvenirs - pashmina, handicrafts and the crowded lanes of Thamel - followed by a farewell dinner.

  1. Return journey to Kathmandu

  2. Free time for shopping in Thamel

  3. Farewell dinner - optional

Depending on your flight, a final breakfast and any last-minute shopping before your transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for the journey home.

  1. Hotel check-out

  2. Airport transfer for your departure flight

Good to know

Before you go
When to come

Two clear windows

  • Autumn (Sep–Nov): the clearest skies and most stable weather of the year - the single best window for this route.
  • Spring (Mar–May): warm days, rhododendrons in bloom, and good mountain views.
  • Monsoon (Jun–Aug): heavy rain and the mountains largely hidden.
  • Winter (Dec–Feb): cold at altitude, but workable in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan.
Visa & entry

Visa on arrival for most

  • Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. Bring two passport photographs and payment in cash or by card.
  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry.
  • Visa fees, subject to change: 15 days US$30, 30 days US$50, 90 days US$125.
  • Check current rules with Nepal's Department of Immigration before you travel.
Permits & getting around

One permit, arranged for you

  • Chitwan National Park entry permit, arranged by your lodge or operator and payable at the park entrance.
  • No TIMS or ACAP trekking permits are needed, since this itinerary includes no multi-day trekking.
  • Kathmandu to Pokhara: a 6–7 hour scenic drive, or a 25-minute domestic flight.
  • Pokhara to Chitwan: a 5–6 hour drive via Mugling.
What to pack

Layers, above all

  • A warm fleece or jacket for the Nagarkot and Sarangkot mornings, and light cottons for Chitwan.
  • Comfortable walking shoes and a light daypack.
  • Sun protection - hat, sunglasses, sunscreen.
  • Insect repellent, especially for Chitwan.
  • Modest clothing for temple visits, with shoulders and knees covered.
Health & safety

Low altitude, ordinary precautions

  • No vaccinations are mandatory, but Hepatitis A and B, typhoid and routine vaccines are commonly recommended. Consult a travel doctor.
  • Drink only bottled or purified water.
  • This route stays below 2,200 m throughout, so the risk of serious altitude sickness is low.
  • Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended.
