1. Narita International Airport (NRT)

   Land at Narita, Tokyo's principal international gateway, about 60km east of the city centre. After immigration and customs you are met by your driver for a private transfer into central Tokyo.

1. Asakusa & Sensoji Temple

   Tokyo's oldest and most significant Buddhist temple, founded in 645 AD and dedicated to the bodhisattva Kannon. Enter through the vast Kaminarimon - the Thunder Gate, with its famous red lantern - before reaching the main hall and five-storey pagoda.

2. Nakamise Shopping Street

   A lively pedestrian street running straight to Sensoji, lined with small shops selling traditional snacks, crafts and souvenirs. It has served visitors to the temple for centuries.

3. Tokyo Skytree observation deck

   At 634 metres, the tallest structure in Japan. High-speed lifts take you to the Tembo Deck for sweeping views across the city - and on clear days, Mt. Fuji in the distance.

4. Odaiba photo stops

   A futuristic man-made island in Tokyo Bay. Stop for photographs at the illuminated Rainbow Bridge and the local replica of the Statue of Liberty looking out over the water.

1. Mt. Fuji 5th Station

   The Subaru Line winds up the north face to 2,300 metres - halfway up the mountain, and as high as anyone goes without walking. There is a shrine, a handful of shops, and on a clear day a view out over the Fuji Five Lakes with the cloud sitting below you.

   Insider tipSnow closes the road from roughly mid-November to late April. Out of season the day runs to the 1st Station and the Fuji Sengen Shrine instead - lower, sheltered, and still very much the mountain.

2. Oshino Hakkai

   A small traditional village built around eight crystal-clear spring ponds, fed by snowmelt filtered through Mt. Fuji's lava rock over decades. Thatched-roof buildings and craft stalls surround the water.

3. Fuji Peace Park

   A park in the Fuji foothills offering some of the region's most celebrated photographs, with the mountain forming a dramatic backdrop over the landscaped grounds.

4. Lake Kawaguchiko

   The most accessible of the Fuji Five Lakes, famous for postcard reflections of the mountain on still days. A relaxed lakeside walk, with cherry blossom or autumn colour framing the mountain in season.

The day is yours. Most travellers spend it shopping and wandering - Tokyo rewards both - but there is no schedule and nothing you have to be at.

2. Shopping and wandering

   Ginza for department stores and flagship boutiques, Shinjuku and Shibuya for scale and crowds, Akihabara for electronics and games, Harajuku for streetwear. All are easy to reach on the metro from a central hotel.
